The right placement depends on the house, the ground and how fast your household needs to reach it. Every option is anchored and certified to the same criteria.

Questions

Before
you buy.

What standard should a safe room meet?

FEMA P-320 says storm shelters and safe rooms must meet all ICC 500 requirements. FEMA's criteria design for a 250 mph wind regardless of location, and walls are tested by firing a 15-pound 2x4 at them at 100 mph.

Does FEMA certify safe rooms?

No. FEMA does not test or certify products. Manufacturers certify to ICC 500 and label their products, and the National Storm Shelter Association verifies producers that meet its process.

Can a safe room go in the ground anywhere?

No. FEMA does not support placing safe rooms where floodwater could endanger the people inside, and in-ground units must be anchored so rising groundwater cannot push them up.
