Myth: Underground Automatically Means Safe

6 min readStyrkholmUpdated October 2026

Earth is an extraordinary shield against radiation, blast and weather. It also brings hazards of its own, and they are present every day, not only in an emergency.

Radon

Radon is a natural radioactive gas that seeps from soil and rock and collects in basements and below-grade rooms. The EPA calls it the second leading cause of lung cancer and the leading cause among people who have never smoked, with about 21,000 related deaths a year in the U.S. Its action level is 4 picocuries per liter, and it suggests considering a fix between 2 and 4. Every below-grade space should be tested, and mitigation is far easier to build in during construction than to add later.

Moisture

A few feet down, the ground holds roughly 40 to 70°F all year. That stability is comfortable, but warm, humid air meeting cool walls condenses. Without waterproofing, drainage and dehumidification, below-grade space grows mold, rusts equipment and spoils stored food.

Water pressure

Groundwater pushes against walls and floors, and the pressure rises with depth. A structure designed without knowing the water table can leak, crack or, in the worst cases, lift. A geotechnical investigation comes before design.

Air

In a closed room, exhaled carbon dioxide becomes a problem before oxygen runs low, and body heat makes a full shelter dangerous in warm weather. See the vent pipe myth.

None of this is a reason not to build below grade. It is the reason to build it properly. Read the Styrkholm Spec.

Key takeaways

  • Radon collects in below-grade spaces; the EPA estimates about 21,000 related lung cancer deaths a year.
  • Steady ground temperatures make condensation and mold the most common underground problem.
  • Groundwater pressure must be designed for, not hoped against.
  • Carbon dioxide, not oxygen, is usually the first limit in a closed room.
