Water
North Dakota's Department of Water Resources administers water permits under the State Engineer. No permit is needed for domestic, livestock, fish and wildlife or recreational use if total use stays under 12.5 acre-feet a year, about four million gallons, though the works must be reported to the state. Irrigation of five acres or more always needs a permit.
Building codes
North Dakota maintains a State Building Code based on the International Residential Code but does not enforce it directly. Cities, counties and townships that choose to enforce building codes must use the state code, so rural areas without an enforcing jurisdiction may have no inspections. We build to the code regardless.
Climate and growing season
North Dakota spans zones 3b to 4b. The state geological survey describes a growing season of about 110 days or less near the Canadian border and in the center of the state, and 130 or more in the Missouri and Red River valleys. Winter heat, fuel storage and a four-season greenhouse are the core of any North Dakota design; read Winter Proof.
Hazards
Drought dominates North Dakota's billion-dollar disasters in NOAA's records, followed by flooding and severe storms. Blizzards and extreme cold shape access, structures and snow management.
Energy
North Dakota generates far more electricity than it uses, mainly from coal and wind, and exports nearly half. Strong wind is a resource for an off-grid estate as well as a design load.
Our view
With about 11 people per square mile, North Dakota delivers real isolation. It suits clients who are serious about self-reliance and willing to design for extreme winters.
