What it is
A biological threat is a disease that spreads widely and quickly, from a natural pandemic to a deliberate release. The danger to a household is twofold: the illness itself, and the disruption that follows as workers stay home, supply chains slow and hospitals fill.
What recent history shows
COVID-19 showed how quickly an illness becomes a supply crisis. Shelves emptied of basics, medicines and equipment ran short, and families who could withdraw from crowded places, with food and medicine on hand, had choices that others did not.
How we design for it
For biological threats, the estate is built with a clean side and a dirty side. Supply air to the quarters passes through HEPA filtration and the space is held at positive pressure. An airlock and decontamination shower separate the outside from the living space, and an isolation room with its own air path lets the household care for someone who falls ill without exposing everyone else.
Just as important is the ability to stay withdrawn: six months of food and medicine on site, water and power that need no outside service, and a plan for how the household receives anything from outside.
