What it is
Wildfire is the most likely hazard many rural Western properties will face. NOAA's billion-dollar disaster records show wildfire and drought dominating the costliest events in states like Idaho, Montana, Nevada and New Mexico. Fires now burn hotter, longer and closer to homes than they did a generation ago.
How homes actually burn
Most homes lost to wildfire are not overrun by a wall of flame. They are ignited by embers, burning debris carried on the wind, sometimes far ahead of the fire, that land in gutters, vents, decks and dry vegetation against the house.
How we design for it
Fire is designed against from site selection onward: where the residence sits on the land, which way the slope runs and what fuel surrounds it. Structures use noncombustible roofing and exterior materials, ember-resistant vents, and defensible space maintained around every building. Water reserves and pumps that run without the grid support firefighting on site.
Below-grade quarters with filtered air give the household a place to wait out smoke and, in the worst case, a fire front that cannot be evacuated in time. Evacuation remains the first plan when it is safe; the quarters are the last.
What you can do now
Walk your property and look for anything that burns within five feet of the house: wood mulch, firewood, furniture, dry plants. That zone is where most ember ignitions start.
