What it is
Civil unrest is a breakdown of ordinary order: protests that turn violent, looting after a disaster, or simple desperation when food, fuel and medicine run short. It concentrates where people are, in cities and along major roads, and it tends to follow the other emergencies on this list rather than arrive on its own.
Why scarcity matters
Most people are generous in a crisis, and communities often pull together. The risk grows with duration. A household that has to go out for supplies in the second or third week of a disruption is more exposed than one that never has to leave.
How we design for it
Protection begins with the land: distance from population centers and major highways, terrain that offers sight lines, and a single road in. The estate has a reinforced perimeter and one controlled entry through a gatehouse, cameras and sensors on independent power, a hardened residence and a final retreat below grade.
Just as important is discretion. From the road, a Styrkholm estate looks like a well-kept private residence. Read how we approach discretion, and our guide to perimeter security.
What you can do now
Think about who would know that your family is prepared. The fewer people who know, the better, and that starts with how your property is designed and built.
