Food Production on a Private Compound

7 min readStyrkholmUpdated October 2026

A pantry runs out. A working estate keeps producing. We plan for both.

Stores and production

Food security on a compound has two halves: what is stored and what the land produces. Stored food carries the household through emergencies and winters, while gardens, orchards and greenhouses keep the stores replenished.

The greenhouse

A well-designed greenhouse extends the growing season on both ends and can produce greens through much of the winter. Placement, glazing, ventilation and thermal mass are designed for the local climate, and the structure is tied into the estate's water and power.

Garden beds

Raised beds warm earlier, drain well and are easier to work. Drip irrigation on timers keeps them productive with little water. Beds are placed for sun, protected from wildlife and close enough to the house to be tended every day.

Orchards and perennials

Fruit and nut trees, berries and perennial vegetables take years to come into full production, which is why we plant them early in the build, often before the house is finished.

Small livestock

Laying hens are a common and practical addition. Any livestock adds daily work and needs secure shelter, water and feed storage, so it is planned with the household's appetite for chores in mind.

The root cellar

A root cellar keeps potatoes, roots, apples and squash for months using the steady cool temperature and humidity of the earth. It is often built alongside or within the below-grade quarters.

Storage and preservation

Long-term storage works best with a rotation system so the oldest food is used first. Home canning should follow tested methods such as the USDA Complete Guide to Home Canning. Drying, freezing and curing round out the preserving year.

Key takeaways

  • Combine stored food with land that keeps producing.
  • A greenhouse extends the season on both ends.
  • Orchards take years to bear, so plant them first.
  • Rotate stored food and preserve using tested methods.
