The Pentagon is planning for bases that can hold for 90 days. What that means for your family.

Reported planning under the FORTRESS initiative would have every major U.S. base sustain itself for at least 90 days. A family estate deserves at least as much.

What happened

On September 30, 2026, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced FORTRESS, short for Federal Operations for Resilience, Troop Resources, Energy, Supply, and Survivability. In his words, every major military installation in America is going to generate its own power, independent of the civilian grid. A memo laid out five pillars: energy independence, supply-chain and industrial-base resilience, a strategic defense reserve, installation hardening and cyber, and space and spectrum resilience. The Pentagon will begin by assessing roughly 500 bases in the continental United States.

On October 25, Fox News Digital reported, citing internal planning documents, that the Pentagon is developing a requirement for every major continental U.S. installation to sustain essential operations on its own for at least 90 days, covering power and extending to water, fuel and communications. A senior defense official has said fully meeting the goal could take years, and no cost or timeline has been released.

Why it matters

Military planners do not plan for things they consider impossible. The people responsible for keeping the country's bases running have concluded that a long loss of civilian power, water and supply is a scenario worth preparing for, and that the preparation takes years.

It is worth noticing what a base has that a family does not: convoys, aircraft, depots and a chain of command that can move supplies to it. A private household has only what is already on its land.

What it means for a family estate

If 90 days is the floor for an installation that can be resupplied, it is a reasonable floor for a household that cannot, and not a ceiling. A disruption that begins in the fall has to be carried through the winter. That is why Styrkholm builds every compound to the 180-day standard: water, power, heat, food, medicine and protection for six months.

The Pentagon's pillars map onto an estate almost exactly. Energy independence is solar, storage and backup generation. Supply-chain resilience is six months of stored and rotated supplies. Hardening is the perimeter, the residence and the quarters below.
